Our Story So Far
Landon Friesen (Owner of Urban yard) and his wife Jody have been married since 2008 and have 3 biological kids and one wonderful foster son. They love spending time together going for walks, fishing, hiking, playing games, reading and having family movie nights. Their lives changed drastically spring of 2020 when Landon’s job was a casualty of Covid and he was laid off in March. Not being one to sit around, he immediately got started thinking about starting his own business, something he had dreamed of doing for many years!
The Start
April 2020
Starting with yard care was an easy transition, with 10 years of landscaping experience and four years of managing a large camp facility here in Manitoba, it was a natural fit. So in April of 2020 Urban Yard was born with the goal of providing quality yard care for commercial and residential clients in the Southeast corner of Manitoba.
Owen Joins
May 2020
Since Owen started working for Urban Yard in May of 2020 there was discussion about if he would ever be able to buy in. Owen comes from an entrepreneurial family and has a business mind. In 2022 Owen became a shareholder and has helped continue to build Urban Yard with attention to detail, desire to create systems, and create a company culture that draws employees and customers to work with Urban Yard.
Landscaping Focus
January 2023
Starting 2023 we decided to focus solely on landscaping and have Schalla Lawn Care begin managing our yard maintenance services. This freed us up to devote ourselves to installation services; training staff, working on systems and procedures, and purchasing equipment to provide an exceptional experience for our clients!
New Location
2024
That is right. We are no longer working out of Landon's garage. Urban Yard has moved our operations onto our own property just outside of Steinbach. This is a big step for our team as we grow and work on more and more yards here in southeastern Manitoba.
Schalla Lawn Care
January 2026
Urban Yard and Schalla Lawn Care officially merge and brand under the name Urban Yard. Starting at the age of 12 Jeff has provided lawn care services to Steinbach and the surrounding area for over 22 years. He continues to enjoy the work and is known for developing a team and work environment that provides an exceptional customer experience. The merger allows Jeff to continue overseeing the yard maintenance division and for Landon and Owen to remain focused on installation services.
